What’s the first thing that you do when you wake up? Do you quickly flick that little switch and wait patiently for what feels like the longest 2 minutes for the jug to boil? You know so you can get that cup of coffee into your system and start functioning?
Here at RHNZ, you might be surprised to hear that coffee isn’t the first thing on our minds when we wake up. Although sometimes it is very much needed! (Teething is not a fun time in our households!) But we both love nothing more than to down a cup of hot water with fresh squeezed lemon juice!
Why we drink it?
Firstly as you all know, water is essential for the body to function. First thing in the morning, we have often fasted and not had any water for a significant period of time. Having some water to rehydrate the body first thing, is really good for us. But the benefits of having warm water, is that it kickstarts the metabolism by warming it up and getting the digestive system. It helps to get the body ready to start breaking down the food we will consume in the day ahead.
The extra magical property is the fresh lemon juice. Combining this makes for a super duper detoxifying and cleansing drink that your body will love, and your taste buds will learn to love! We will be honest, when we first started having it, it wasn’t the greatest tasting thing to be downing first thing! But give it a week and you’ll be hooked!

Lemon water has been found to help improve the appearance of skin, it helps to stabilise blood sugars, prevents/helps with constipation by having laxative type properties to it and helps with the absorption of iron! A fairly exhaustive list huh? (That’s really just scratching the surface!)
The extra bonus is that you don’t have to just stick with lemon water! You can totally get creative! Add things like fresh mint leaves, some manuka honey, cinnamon or apple cider vinegar to really spice it up! These additions make for a next level super nutritional and beneficial power drink that your body will love!
