07 Aug CALORIE COUNTING?
For so many years we’ve been lead to believe that if we burn more calories than we eat, weight loss will result. Sounds simple right? In some ways, I guess it makes sense.. until you really start to think about it. Many people are making a big effort with their calorie counting… Literally counting every tiny piece of food they consume through charts, apps and other methods in the attempt to lose weight. Unfortunately more often than not they reach little or no sustainable outcomes. Below are a few simple reasons why we don’t recommend counting calories. If you’re on a weight loss journey and have been thinking about adopting the calorie counting method give this a read first!
WHAT HAPPEN’S TO CALORIES INSIDE THE BODY?
Picture this… In one hand we have a donut and in the other, we have an apple… both worth say 100 calories. When we choose to eat the apple the nutrients go far far beyond the 100 calories! These nutrients are so much more than just calories and as they travel through the body they bump into every single cell and influence how that cell is going to work and behave. We each have trillions of cells within our body and having them functioning well is vital for our overall well-being. When we choose nutritious foods the cells within our body do all the amazing things they are meant to! When we choose to eat the junk it turns into sugar inside the blood and tells us to get sick! Bad food = poor cell function!
CALORIES ARE NOT EQUAL
All food is not created equal, all calories are not created equal and as explained above calories behave completely different inside the body. Calories represent the number units of energy provided by a particular food…however it’s the quality of the food matters most! Whether you’re meeting your calorie goal or not doesn’t mean you are getting enough quality nutrients that your body needs to do all of the things it’s meant to! Crap food is crap food no matter how many calories are involved! Calories from nutritious foods versus foods with zero nutritional value have a completely different effect on the body. Nutritious real foods keep hunger under control, help maintain stable blood sugar levels and minimize food cravings. Nutrient-poor foods have the opposite effect causing brain fog, feeling consistently hungry, stressed, moody etc.
IT CAN COMMUNICATE TO YOUR BODY TO STORE FAT RATHER THAN BURN FAT
Our bodies are wired for survival, historically a reduction in food indicated to the body that there was a war, drought, or disaster that meant food might not be coming around for a while! Whilst this is not the case in modern life our bodies still operate the same way. Our body doesn’t realise that there is an abundance of food available and that we’re just choosing to cut down on calories. What happens when our body fears that there will not be food anytime soon? It stores fat and anything that it can, it can slow down our metabolism making weight loss bloody difficult!
CALORIE COUNTING – IT’S NOT FUN!
Tracking every bit of food that goes in your mouth to keep within or below a certain number of points is so hard both mentally and physically and it’s totally not necessary! It can cause serious food obsessions, anxiety and lead to eating disorders. Food is an amazing part of life and it’s not something that should ever feel overwhelming. If you need to count anything count the number of colorful produce and the number of glasses of water you are consuming each day.
Whilst everyone’s nutritional needs are very different our general advice is to keep it as simple as possible and go back to basics. Eat a diet loaded with real food that is rich in phytonutrients (plants). Eat very little if any processed junk, cook your food from scratch and watch your portion control. Consistently consuming real foods will help keep weight in check, naturally! No calculator or app required! Finally please remember that food is not just calories it’s information that’s got a set of instructions that tells every cell in your body what to do at every single moment with every single bite!
